What are the actual responsibilities of a Justice of the Peace?
A.
Elected to enforce laws of Denton County, State of Texas and United States of America
First level of justice: (next is County Court then District Court)
Has jurisdiction in Criminal and Civil matter (Evictions, Teen Court)
Has civil function: hold both justice and small claims court judiciously, and as quickly as possible
Has criminal jurisdiction of the court: Class C Misdemeanor cases (such as bad checks, truancy, traffic offenses, Parks & Wildlife violations)
Performs magisterial duties such as accepting criminal complaints, ordering arrests, and issuing search warrants
Performs wedding ceremonies
